SUMMARY
The merits of Poincaré as one of the greatest mathematicians of all times are globally acknowledged, but the value of his conventionalist theory of science is still greatly underestimated, and his contributions to physics and its philosophy have unjustly fallen into oblivion.

IDEAS OF RELATIVITY: INTERPRETATIONS IN CONFLICT
The PIRT-Conferences 1988-1998. PIRT-Proc. 1998, Imperial College London

As one of the rather few philosophers attending the biennial conferences on the Physical Interpretations of Relativity Theory from their start in 1988 until 1998, ten years later, I would like to take this opportunity to assess the import of the various contributions offered by these conferences from a philosophical point of view, in order to give some clues as regards the perspectives of future progress in this field of physics. Throughout the past decade all our conferences have been sponsored by the British Society for the Philosophy of Science. For that reason it may not seem imposterous for a philosopher to assume this task.

Observation Theory of Moving Objects
By Zifeng Li (Yanshan University, Hebei Qinhuangdao 066004, China)

Abstract: To observe moving objects, this paper stresses that light speed being the speed of photon relative to its source, introduces the propagation characteristics of light in pure space and in medium. It proposes new concepts called the moving coordinate space–time, the visual space–time and the static coordinate space–time. It derives the relationship among the moving coordinate space–time, the visual space–time and the static coordinate space–time in pure space and in moving medium. It concludes that the moving objects observation theory has solved the measurement problem of moving objects. Movement cannot cause changes in length, in time or in mass. Also, there does not any light barrier.

Demjanov’s Error
Rothwell Bronrowan   physbron@t-online.de

Victor Demjanov is a Soviet scientist at the Ushakov State Marine Academy in Novorossiysk, Russia. In the current year, 2010, he has published a number of papers on interferometry [1], these relating in particular to the Michelson-Morley experiment.
The papers refer back to experimental discoveries allegedly made by him in the period 1968 – 1975. General publication at an earlier date, he writes, was not possible.
Demjanov claims to have found the fault that led to the „negative“ (or zero) results obtained by Michelson (1881), Michelson-Morley (1887) and Miller (1926), to have corrected this fault and to have thereupon
          1) verified the existence of the ether; and
          2) obtained a new – far higher – value for the velocity of the earth in space.

The Dubious Origins of E=mc²
Rothwell Bronrowan  physbron@t-online.de

This paper gives the derivation of E=mc². It also raises serious doubts as to the validity of the equation. This is not actually a paper I ever intended writing! All I wanted initially was to check again quickly on why c was involved in Einstein’s famous formula in the first place. But this wasn’t easy!
I found a number of articles in the Web beginning with statements like „… a full explanation would be too complex.“ Not what I wanted.
Then there were those that claimed to give something like the easiest, fastest or simplest explanation, but usually also began with something like, „Imagine an object travelling at almost the speed of light …“ Not what I wanted either!  So eventually I dug out an old Encyclopaedia Britannica – and found pretty much what I was looking for, fairly well written, on less than 3 pages.

The Lorentz Triangle
Rothwell Bronrowan  physbron@t-online.de

One of the pillars of relativity, the Lorentz factor appears in length contraction, in timedilation and in mass increase. It is also the primary factor determining frames of reference as depicted in the Lorentz transformations.  Perhaps the world’s simplest definition [1] of the Lorentz factor is:

the ratio of the hypothenus of a right-angled triangle to one of the other sides!

This paper will trace the origins of the Lorentz factor, it will show that, as derived by Lorentz, it is merely a specific case of a more general factor, and it will introduce a new tool, the Lorentz triangle, with which much of the confusion associated with this concept can be eliminated.

Death by Mathematics
by Miles Mathis

In the 20th century, physics underwent a transformation. No one would deny that. But normally the transformation is credited to Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. And normally the transformation is seen as a great advance. In this paper I will argue the opposite. The transformation was due more to a transformation in mathematics, and that transformation has been almost wholly deleterious.

This transformation due to mathematics began in the 19th century, but it did not engulf physics until the 20th century. In the 19th century the stage was set: we had several abstract mathematical fields that reached „fruition“, including a math based on action variables and principles, a math based on curved space, a math based on matrices, a math based on tensors, a math based on i, and a math based on infinities.

Relativity Demystified
by Miles Mathis

In this paper I will explain Relativity in the simplest possible terms. This paper might be called an explanation for laymen, except that it will also be useful to physicists, even those at the top of the field. Relativity has existed in such a partial and muddled state for the last century that everyone might be called laymen with regard to it. There has been no clergy of Relativity, except a false clergy. Einstein, the high priest, understood Relativity in large part, but his explanations only confused the rest of the world. And even Einstein did not understand Relativity in full. That is why he was not able to simplify it. Relativity is much more transparent than we have been led to believe.
